SOUTH AFRICA
I spent four weeks volunteering outside of Cape Town in the sleepy surf town of Muizenberg. I worked at a primary school with kids from the Vrygrond and Capricorn Townships just right across the street. I was shocked to learn of the violence within the townships. It was difficult to take the kids out after school because some lived in areas too dangerous for them to go home at a time later than normal. We were able to take some kids out to a movie, but even our Uber driver did not want to linger in the Township long when we had to drop them off.
I definitely learned a lot from this trip regarding how to engage to at risk youth who have problems much greater than mine.
Outside of class, I went to Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, climbed Table Mountain, went on a safari along the Garden Route, went to every mall and food market in Cape Town, oh, and went to the doctor... because I was sick practically the entire frigid 4 weeks!
All in all, South Africa is gorgeous and I would love to go back when the weather is a bit warmer!
