SRI LANKA
My short time in Sri Lanka is something I will never forget. I spent my first night in Columbo sharing a bed with a volunteer I had never met before (turned out to be an amazing person). My second night was spent in Kandy. The people around me were going to the hospital, all of my roommates were missing - I honestly still can't tell you what really happened outside my room that night. The third night was spent in what would be my final destination, Ambalangoda, a tiny beach village in the south where the sea turtle conservation project is held. Reports of recent break ins to the volunteer houses had me on edge, as well as volunteers being followed by local men on the regular. I can say I have never been so afraid for my safety. Through all of this, I have this urge to return and discover more about the culture so I can better understand it and fall in love with it. Ambalangoda is close to the beautiful town of Hikkaduwa and pretty close to the fort city of Galle, which both made for beautiful afternoon or weekend getaways!
